A Parent’s Smartphone Time May Be Linked to Slower Vocabulary Growth in Children

A Norwegian study of 747 children found that greater primary-parent smartphone use was associated with slower growth in receptive vocabulary from ages 5 to 7. Most other measures of child and parent screen use were not consistently linked to language growth.

Each week, a smartphone can produce a small, unremarkable reckoning: hours spent tapping, scrolling, replying, and looking away. In a Norwegian study of 747 children followed from ages 5 to 7, the average daily number recorded on a primary parent’s phone was associated with how quickly the child’s receptive vocabulary grew. The more smartphone time a parent reported, the slower that growth tended to be.

The finding does not mean a phone is silently draining words from a child’s mind. It comes from an observational study, so it cannot establish what caused the difference. But it directs attention beyond the familiar question of how long children themselves spend on screens, toward the wider digital environment in which conversation, play, reading, work, and distraction share the same hours.

A Number From the Phone

The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, drew on the SpedAims Kohort, a population-based project that follows childrenโ€™s development from ages 4 to 5 onward through a collaboration among five Norwegian universities. Researchers enrolled families through municipalities across Norway in spring 2023, when the children were about 5 years old.

The team tested receptive vocabulary and receptive grammar every spring for three years, following children through the final years of early childhood education and care and into first grade. At the outset, parents completed an online questionnaire about their children’s weekday and weekend screen use, childrenโ€™s access to devices, and parents’ social-media habits.

The primary parent also extracted an exact average daily smartphone screen-time figure from a week of device records. That direct measure was unusually specific. The mean was 3.21 hours a day, while 23.6% of primary parents reported more than four hours daily.

The team then used latent growth modeling, which allowed them to distinguish a childโ€™s language score at the start of the study from the pace at which that score changed. Their models took account of parental education and household income, and models of device ownership also accounted for birth order.

Most of the screen measures did not produce a consistent association with language growth. That included the parent-reported amount of time children spent on screens, as well as mothers’ and fathers’ social-media use. The primary parent’s smartphone time was the exception: every additional hour per day was associated with 0.42 fewer receptive-vocabulary points of growth per year. The association was not found for receptive grammar.

What a Phone May Stand In For

The study cannot see what happened in the moments behind the total. It does not show whether a phone interrupted a conversation, replaced shared reading, was used for work, or simply reflected a family under pressure. Nor can it show whether an unmeasured aspect of family life shaped both parental phone use and childrenโ€™s language development.

The authors propose that overall smartphone use may be a marker for reduced opportunities for responsive interaction at home. Vocabulary is particularly dependent on the quantity and quality of language a child hears, and it develops through exchanges that can be brief but cumulative: a question answered, a new word explained, a story interrupted and resumed.

That interpretation fits a broader, but still incomplete, body of research. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 studies involving 14,900 participants found that parental technology use in a childโ€™s presence was associated with poorer cognitive and psychosocial outcomes in young children. The effects were small, and the review did not establish that technology use caused them. Its authors called for stronger studies capable of identifying which circumstances matter.

Another systematic review and meta-analysis, covering 100 studies, concluded that the setting around screen use can matter as much as the duration. Co-use with another person was associated with better cognitive outcomes, while background television and caregiver screen use during routines were associated with poorer outcomes. The researchers argued that screen-time totals by themselves are too crude to capture these differences.

A Device Was Linked to the Starting Point

Children’s own devices produced a different pattern. At enrollment, 45.5% of the children owned at least one digital device, most often a tablet. Those children had baseline receptive-vocabulary scores 5.13 points lower, and receptive-grammar scores 4.56 points lower, than children without a device after the relevant adjustments. But ownership was not associated with a slower rate of subsequent improvement in either measure.

That finding is a warning against a simple causal reading. Owning a device may signal earlier access to screens, greater independence in using them, different supervision, an older siblingโ€™s unused tablet, or something else about a familyโ€™s circumstances. It may also be related to language differences that were already present. The study cannot disentangle those possibilities.

Previous work similarly suggests that the label โ€œscreen timeโ€ hides important distinctions. In a meta-analysis of 42 studies involving 18,905 children, greater screen quantity was associated with weaker language skills, while educational programming and co-viewing were associated with stronger language skills. The result was not a verdict on screens as a category, but evidence that what children watch and who is with them matter.

Keeping the Conversation Available

The practical implication is not that parents should turn their phones into contraband. Phones are often tools for work, care, family logistics, and connection. This study did not distinguish personal from work use, could not determine whether a child used the parent’s phone, and did not measure content, co-use, or the quality of the parent-child interaction that surrounded a screen.

It also measured screen habits only at the beginning of the study, even though routines can change rapidly over two years. Its participants had, on average, higher education and household income than Norwegian norms, and the countryโ€™s widely available early childhood education and care may provide language experiences that differ from those in other settings.

Still, the study sharpens a useful question for families and clinicians: what does a screen displace, if anything? Shared reading is one activity likely to preserve language-rich interaction, although its effects should not be exaggerated. A meta-analysis found a small overall benefit of shared-reading interventions for childrenโ€™s language, with a negligible estimate in studies that compared them with active control activities. The case is for making room for conversation, not for prescribing one guaranteed remedy.

A phoneโ€™s weekly tally cannot reveal what happened in a household. It cannot tell whether a parent was paying bills, arranging a doctorโ€™s appointment, reading a message from school, or missing a childโ€™s question. But in this cohort, that quiet number carried a signal that childrenโ€™s own screen totals largely did not, and it points researchers toward the everyday exchanges still hidden behind it.
