Smartphones and Album Releases Linked to More Traffic Fatalities

A study of 10 blockbuster album releases finds that US traffic fatalities rose on release days, alongside a sharp increase in music streaming. The pattern is concerning, but it cannot show that streaming, or a smartphone, directly caused any individual crash.

The study can’t identify what any driver was doing in any particular crash. The answer was yes, although association is not proof that streaming caused the increase.

Ten Release Days Became a Natural Experiment

Vishal R. Patel and colleagues examined 233,809 traffic fatalities recorded in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System between 2017 and 2022. FARS is not a survey: it is NHTSA’s nationwide census of qualifying fatal motor-vehicle crashes, assembled from records including police reports, death certificates, toxicology reports, and vehicle and driver files. That scope makes it a powerful source for counting deaths, but it does not supply a minute-by-minute record of a driver’s phone use.

The team selected the 10 albums with the largest first-day streaming totals during that period, including releases by Taylor Swift, Drake, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles, Kanye West and 21 Savage. Most were Friday releases. For each one, the researchers compared its release day with the 10 days before and after it, then adjusted for holidays, day of week, week of year and calendar year.

That comparison matters because ordinary traffic risk has a calendar. Friday driving differs from Tuesday driving; holiday travel differs from a routine week. The study’s surrounding window included the same weekday one week before and after each release, while the statistical model also accounted for broader weekday and seasonal patterns.

The Spike Appeared on the Release Day

The researchers found the highest adjusted fatality count on day zero, the day an album was released. Nine of the 10 individual album dates had more fatalities than their matched same-weekday controls. Restricting the analysis to Friday releases still produced an elevated fatality rate, with a rate ratio of 1.13 compared with the Fridays one week before and after.

They also ran falsification tests. In 1,000 simulations using random dates, only 14 produced an estimated increase larger than the observed one; 20 did so when the placebo dates were random Fridays. Applying an album’s calendar date to other study years, when no album had been released, did not show an increase.

Those checks make a simple Friday effect or holiday-adjacent travel a less satisfying explanation. They do not, however, transform the result into a direct measurement of distraction. Release days can carry other changes, from social events and travel to the music itself, that the researchers could not observe.

Streaming Is a Clue, Not a Crash Reconstruction

The proposed pathway is plausible: a driver may search for a new album, choose tracks, manage a queue or interact with a dashboard display while a car is moving. The subgroup patterns fit that account, particularly the larger estimated increase in single-occupant vehicles and in cars with the infotainment platform considered by the authors. But they do not establish it. More streaming may occur at home, at work or in the hands of passengers, and FARS cannot say whether a driver in a fatal crash had streamed music.

That distinction is especially important because distracted driving is difficult to measure after a crash. NHTSA defines distraction as attention diverted from driving to another activity, which can include phone use, adjusting audio controls, eating, passengers and other tasks. In its 2022 data, NHTSA recorded 3,308 deaths in distraction-affected crashes, but warns that differences in police-report forms, missing witnesses and rapidly changing technology can lead to underreporting or inconsistent classification. The agency’s report details both the count and those measurement limits.

The new study therefore makes a narrower claim than its headline implication might suggest. Major release days were associated with both higher online streaming and more traffic fatalities. The authors argue that smartphone-enabled distraction is a likely contributor, while explicitly acknowledging alternatives such as release-day outings, parties, alcohol use, noise or responses to music.

A Safety Question for Streaming Interfaces

The finding points beyond a warning to put the phone away. If the association reflects even part of the causal chain, the risk may lie in the interaction required to discover and control new music, not in listening alone. That puts attention on the design of phones, voice assistants and in-car systems at moments when a popular release creates an unusual burst of demand.

The result also carries a boundary that future work will need to cross: this was a study of fatal crashes, not all collisions, and it measured a population-level alignment of dates rather than individual behavior. The next decisive evidence would connect in-car streaming activity, with privacy safeguards, to driving outcomes without treating every stream as a hand reaching for a screen.
