Using a new cone-shaped solar concentrator, researchers showed that sunlight can be used to create entangled photons. This could one day enable satellites to create secure encryption keys using the sunlight already abundant in space.

Sunlight Can Generate Quantum Entanglement, No Laser Required

Physicists funneled concentrated sunlight into a nonlinear crystal and pulled out polarization-entangled photon pairs, the first entanglement ever measured from a sunlight-pumped source. The pairs violated Bell’s inequality, showing that lasers are optional for quantum light.
